What is MVP?

MVP or mitral valve prolapse is a medical condition that involves problems in the mitral valves of the heart. These valves are located in between the left atrium and left ventricle, the two left chambers of the heart.  Normal blood flow runs from the left atrium to the left ventricles. When the blood reaches the left ventricles, the mitral valves supposedly close tightly to avoid the backflow of blood. When part of the mitral valve slips back during closure, some blood may rush back from the left ventricle to the left atrium. This condition is called mitral valve prolapse and is commonly associated with a murmuring sound.

Mitral valve prolapse or MVP is more common in females versus males. This condition is also said to be inherited from relatives and family members who have a history of mitral valve abnormalities. In many cases, the mitral valves may undergo thickening or degeneration causing the prolapse or slippage during its closure function. The prolapsing part or leaflet of the mitral valve typically allows some blood to go back to the left atrial chamber. When the condition is so severe, serious complications may result leading to arrhythmias and even heart failure.

Patients with MVP often complain of pain the chest which maybe very disturbing. Some patients also have difficulty in breathing. It is also common for MVP patients to have swollen legs or feet. Other symptoms of MVP include palpitations, dizziness, and anxiety. During auscultation, the characteristic heart murmur is often heard in MVP patients.  Some patients may have MVP but do not necessarily experience any symptoms at all. Some have minor discomforts and can basically go on with their normal lives without medication or treatment. Those with severe palpitations and chest pain may be given medication like beta-blockers. In extreme cases, mitral valve repair or even replacement surgery may be necessary.
