One of the most popular Tamil actors during the 1990s, he went on to capture popular imagination as an ideal romantic hero. His career took a major leap with the 1995 thriller Aasai. Since then, he acted in multiple super-hit films such as Kadhal Kottai, Kadhal Mannan and Aval Varuvala. After dropping out of school before completing his Higher Secondary education in 1986, Ajith used to work as a two-wheeler mechanic as he was interested in bike racing. He secured a license as a driver in this way.

Believe it or not, Ajith’s first love was not movies but racing! He invested huge amounts into it and even used to borrow equipments. An accident ended his career in racing. By that time his talent as an actor was discovered however.

The first film of Ajith Kumar’s career was a low-budget Telegu film titled Prema Pustakam in 1992. It remains the only Telegu film of his career.

Ajith acted in the lead role of a movie titled Ullaasam which was Amitabh Bachchan’s first Tamil production. The movie did not do well at the box office.

1999 was the best year in Ajith’s career. 6 of his movies were hits at the box-office including Vaali, arguably the best film of his career.

Poovellam Un Vasam, a family drama in which Ajith acted in 2001, earned him the Special Best Actor Award from the Tamil Nadu state government.

Ajith appeared in one mainstream Bollywood movie in his career and it was Ashoka, in which he acted in a negative role beside Shah Rukh Khan.

Ajith has won three Filmfare Best Actor Awards for Vaali, Villain and Varalaru respectively. He has also been nominated two more times for this award.

Ajith kept the passion for racing alive in him even after a successful career in films. He was an active participant at the Formula Asia BMW championships in the year 2003 along with the Formula 2 championship in 2010.

Ajith was listed No.61 in the list of India’s top 100 celebrities for the year 2012 by Forbes.
