LCD Screen stands for ‘œLiquid Crystal Display’ Screen which is used in modern day monitors, televisions and other display units. It is made up of small uniform display units known as the Pixels which determine the resolution of the screen. In recent days almost every display unit in the industry is either LCD or LED or ‘œLight Emitting Diode.’
Here are some interesting facts about the LCD that were rarely known:
A LCD is preferred to a CRT (cathode ray tube) screen because of its compact size. It is made up of just two thin plates of glass which has liquefied crystals in between them that reflect and act as the display unit. It is devoid of any sort of bulky tubes or heavy weight.
LCD consumes less power than the CRT picture tubes which is why it is mainly preferred in all sorts of household and industrial purposes. Some LCD screens use ambient luminosity to reflect the display. Displays of a computer screen need an external source of power that consumes less power than the cathode ray tube.
LCD is often confused with LED by many people but it was a former technology. There are some technical contexts where LCD is defined incorrectly as ‘œLiquid Crystal Diode.’
It is the most expensive unit of a computer system or any electronic display unit. The LCD screens are damage prone. So it’s necessary to clean the surface using proper methods else scratches will be evident.
While cleaning the LCD it has to be remembered that excess use of ammonia and alcohol based cleansers may damage the screen permanently. This will lead to yellow patches on the screen.
Uses of screen cleansers such as methyl chloride, ethyl acid, acetone, ammonia will first make the LCD screen rough and brittle and then eventually it will crack. Hence regular cleansers such as water, petroleum benzene, isopropyl alcohol and vinegar should be used.
Computer wipes are mostly preferable in this purpose. If not available then a piece of soft cotton cloth will also do but harsh rags and paper tissues should be strictly avoided. Liquid cleansers are to be applied on the cotton external instead of spraying directly on the screen.
Apart from energy savings and economic benefits, there are some more benefits of using LCD such as they generates less heat compared to other display units. It uses less space hence there is room for additional storage in the desk.
LCD screens are not just used in computer display but they are extensively found as wrist watch dials, pocket calculators, and modern day cell-phones to even VGA computers of advanced level.
Research has revealed that the LCD has certain drawbacks as well such as the contrast ratio, viewing angle difference and of course response time. Considering the technological point of view LCD has the potential to out-rage the CRT.
There has been huge technical development regarding the LCD in recent years. There are more applications of LCD such as using it in polymer stabilization of LCD structure.
