One of the most widely prescribed medications in the US, Xanax, also known by its medical term Aplrazolam, is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders.  1 In fact, in April 20120, Xanax was recorded as the most popular drug in the world. 2 Xanax is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders as it relaxes and decreases abnormal excitement in the brain and the central nervous system. 3.  Anxiety disorders refer to panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and phobias.

1. Xanax, patented by Upjohn/Pfizer in 1976, contains anti-anxiety, anti-convulsion and sedative properties. The FDA approved Xanax in 1981 for disorders related to general anxiety, depression, panic disorder and insomnia.

8. As in most medications of a similar nature, a quick withdrawal of Xanax tends to exhibit symptoms such as poor concentration and sensory perception and in some cases even seizure. It is advisable to slowly ease off the drug instead of a cold turkey withdrawal.
9. Xanax can affect mental alertness and coordination and therefore it is advisable for those taking Xanax not to be involved in mechanical activities such as driving or handling of heavy machinery specifically at the beginning stages of the therapy.
10. The uncontrolled availability of Xanax from online pharmacies   has in recent years, raised questions on its quality and effectiveness.  This has become an emerging serious issue as Xanax is to be taken under controlled medical supervision.
