Interesting Facts about Political History of Cambodia

Cambodia is a small country in Southeast Asia along the Gulf of Thailand, bordered by the three countries- Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Locally the country is called ‘œKampuchea’ while it is mainly the Kingdom of Cambodia. Formerly, it was known as Kampuchean Republic or the Khmer Republic.

The country follows a multi-party democratic rule under the reign of constitutional monarchy that had been established in the year 1993. Here are some more interesting facts about Cambodia.

  • Cambodia has beautiful artistic masterpiece of 12th century, the Angkor Wat Temple which might be the greatest religious construction of the world. The walls of the temple are elegantly carved into figures of musicians and dancers from royal court of that era.

  • Although the Khmer Rouge government was keen on destroying every art work of Cambodia still the image of stone carved lion structure, the guardian of Angkor Wat Temple, appears on the flag of this government. It is considered an International treasure.

  • Between the years 1975 and 1979, about 1 million to 2 million Cambodians had died of extreme labor, starvation and execution as well.  It was during the time of the Communist Party of Kampuchea when the government leader Pol Pot tried to apply a communism plan depending of agricultural outputs.

  • The political party started to reign over Cambodia under the name Angka (organization) in the year 1975. It was then that Norodom Sihanouk ran the country even while being under house arrest. By the next year Pol Pot was the self-claimed Prime Minister of the country.

  • The higher political leaders started to hide incognito and were never known by their original names. Nuon Chea was known as Brother#2 while Pol Pot remained Brother#1 and Ieng Sary was called Brother#3.

  • The military bases of the Khmer were shifted to the eastern frontiers of Thailand after experiencing an invasion from Vietnam. Pol Pot took some gruesome measures before his death to save the country from Vietnamese invasion.

  • Cambodia is counted among the poorest of the Southeast Asian countries. But in recent days, around 15% of the population have progressed and grown beyond the poverty line. Development had started from the year 1994 and by the end of 2004 the problems of mal-nutrition, poverty and job crisis were somehow met.

  • The country has gone through a gush of rapid financial growth from the year 2004 to 2008. Yet under-nutrition problems are still experienced in some cases. The agricultural economy is somehow found to be not properly diverse.

  • The present Government of the country is quite worried about the food security issues and nutrition problems. Cambodia is held as a developing country as different departments are dealing with issues such as health, economy, proper distribution of nutrition, agriculture and so on.

  • An international Trust, The Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, had approved an amount of $39.1 million in 2011, for the better food security and improved nutrition of Cambodia.

Along with assistance from the International donor community, the Cambodian Government has recently introduced the proper strategic Framework for Nutrition and Food Security and many more key survey strategies such as the Strategy for Agriculture and Water 2010-2013 Investment Plan.
