Catnip is an herb that belongs to the mint family.  It is also referred to as “cat mint” because cats are said to be attracted to the plant because of its scent. Much like mint, catnip also has textured stems and leaves and has its own distinct minty smell.  Scientifically known as “nepeta cataria”, the catnip herb contains the aromatic chemical called “nepetalactone”.  This chemical is what attracts the cats to smell the plant and even eat it. For cats, the catnip herb is something that stimulates their olfactory system and make them euphoric or feel good. For people who wish to grow catnip in their gardens, they may need to have them protected from pet cats through wires.

The catnip leaves are also natural remedies for various illnesses. The common cold may be relieved by the aromatic effect of catnip.  By simply putting the leaves on hot water, its aroma will help alleviate secretions in the nasal passages and possibly relieve cold symptoms.  People with bronchitis may also benefit from the same effect on congested bronchioles.  The nepetalactone content of catnip herb will help promote decongestion and relieve tightness in the bronchioles. With catnip’s effect on the brain and olfactory system, people with insomnia may also get relief from its leaves.

Similar to mint, catnip leaves may also be used to be made into tea.  Its aroma is enough to induce a feel-good sensation. The nepetalactone is also said to produce a sedative effect and this why some people with headaches and other minor aches and pains would drink catnip tea.  Vegetable and fruit salads may also get spiced up with catnip leaves for a minty taste and aromatic flavor. For longer shelf life, catnip leaves just need to be dried off. After which, the dried leaves may be stored in the refrigerator for future use as tea.
