PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports that establishes the needed behavioral support needed by students to be successful. PBIS provides for the creation and sustainability of programs in schools, classroom and individual support systems for the students.

There are many who question the need to strengthen the support system of the youth. Many individuals often ask why students need to be taught good behavior when good behavior is already expected of them.

Others also state that providing a framework to lessen misbehavior is unnecessary given that adults can just expect the younger ones to behave.

Schools in the past have focused on a reactive type of discipline; providing punishment for the misbehavior of its students. Punishment includes taking away of privileges, reprimanding students, suspension from classes and even school expulsion.

Researchers however argued that punishment may be ineffective especially if there is an inconsistent implementation of the punishment system. The absence of any positive reinforcement also renders the punishment system ineffective in addressing misbehavior.

The reinforcement of positive behavior is more effective in teaching students to behave, according to research.

The main goal of PBIS is to create an environment where proper behavior among students is the norm and not the exception.

Schools implement PBIS using a systematic approach. Under PBIS, schools must determine their expected outcome by establishing behavior and academic goals that are supported by the student, educators and the families of students.

PBIS also determines the needed strategies to achieve the goals and gather data to know whether the targets are being met or not. PBIS also identifies the needed support system in order to achieve the goals that were initially identified.
