What is an EDB File?
EDB files are database files of the Microsoft Exchange Server software which is involved in email communications, contact and tasks management, and calendar posting and updating. EDB files are the ones used by the Microsoft Exchange Server in maintaining the mailboxes of registered users. Through the SMTP protocol, mails or messages are sent across Microsoft’s Exchange Server network to and from other servers. When some of these non-SMTP messages need to be stored, the Exchange Server will use the .EDB file extension for this purpose. Also known as “Exchange Information Store Database”, EDB files are the ones that contain the messages classified as non-SMTP.

For users that use Microsoft Outlook email service for example, the EDB files serve as the main access files for your particular profile. Through this file, you can query messages stored on the email server, whether they be sent or received email messages or other forms of information or data. The EDB files contain the details of all email messages and other relevant information.

And just like other files, EDB files may also be corrupted from viruses, errors on the hard disk itself, JET engine problems, failure of the Exchange Server, or improper computer shutdown. When this situation happens, a user won’t be able to view or access his/her email messages, calendar notes, contacts details, and all other important information and data stored on his own mailbox located in the server.
