How many bytes are there in a character?

1.

For most text codes, a character of text consists of exactly one byte. This is the case for text encoded with the old ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) system as well as for English text coded in the modern UTF-8 (8-bit UCS/Unicode Transformation Format) standard. Non-English text coded in UTF-8, however, may consist of between 2 to 6 bytes.
