From monsters with turkey heads to robots that can hardly move, the world of low-budget horror movies features all kinds of weird and wonderful monsters.

You could easily get away with watching these ‘horror’ movies alone in the dark because these creatures are just not that scary. In fact, many of these movies cross genres from horror to comedy as a result of their laughable special effects and hammy acting.

We hope you enjoy our top 10 worst movie monsters!

1. Sting of Death (1965)

Half Man Half Jellyfish Monster

In this film, a jellyfish-like man creature comes to terrorize a remote Island on the edge of the Everglades. The island is home to Dr. Richardson, a marine biologist and expert on jellyfish. The doctor decides to host a party for a group of young students, and it’s not long before the students begin to fall victim to the slow-moving, tentacled creature which looks suspiciously like a man in a wet suit with stick-on tendrils, flipper feet, and transparent garbage bag on his head.

2. Robot Monster (1953)

Robot Monster

Often considered as one of the worst films ever made, Robot Monster was released to the world in 1953. Ro-man, as named by the humans, wipes out the majority of the human population using a calcinator death ray leaving just eight people alive on the Earth. The evil robot looks similar to a big, hairy gorilla with a 70’s circular TV set on its head. This is probably because the writer/director Phil Tucker used his friend George Barrows to play the role of the robot monster, and George brought his own gorilla suit. Tucker provided the TV-styled helmet.

3. The Blob (1958)

After consuming the first victim, a man who discovers the meteorite and makes the mistake of prodding it with a stick, the red, gooey mass proceeds in terrorizing the small, rural town by sliding around menacingly and consuming everyone in its path, growing larger with each grisly meal.

4. Blood Freak (1972)

Blood Freak

This film features a crazed turkey-headed killer, I kid you not.

The film centers around Vietnam veteran Herschell. He begins working at a local turkey factory where he meets a couple of scientists who are conducting tests on the turkey meat using chemicals. After being bribed with marijuana, Herschell agrees to help the scientists by eating some of this meat. After eating a whole turkey, he is found unconscious by the scientists. Thinking he is dead, they decide to dump his body in the woods in fear of being implicated in his death.

Hershall later wakes up to find that he has a giant (paper mache) turkey head in the place of his own head and a thirst for the blood of other marijuana addicts.

5.The Killer Shrews (1959)

The Killer Shrews

This 1959 science fiction film was filmed outside of Dallas, Texas by producers Ken Curtis and Gordon McLendon.

A ship delivers supplies to an island where a doctor is working on a project to reduce world hunger by making humans half-sized. An unfortunate side effect of his experiments leads to the creation of some giant, venomous shrews which try to bite and kill the humans on the island for food.

The killer shrews resemble large, rat-like dogs with fangs. There is also something about the snout of these beasts which resembles a teddy bear, albeit a vicious one.

6. The Giant Claw (1957)

The Giant Claw

Described by the movie makers as an extraterrestrial creature made up of antimatter, making it invulnerable to Earthly weapons, you might expect this creature to look impressive and sophisticated, but sadly you would be wrong.

The giant claw is an awkward creature with an excessively long neck and caricatured bird face. The bird strikes New York City, targeting the Empire State Building and the United Nations building, but it is defeated when the military target the foul creature with a special type of isotope which allows missiles to permeate its shield against the Earthly defenses.

One of the pictures stars, Jeff Morrow, reportedly attended a screening of the movie in his hometown but left the theatre early embarrassed that he might be recognized after hearing the audience laugh every time the strange creature appeared on screen.

7. Devil Girl From Mars (1954)

Chani the Robot Destroyer

Chani is the tall alien robot monster in this film. He accompanies Nyah, a leather clad female alien, to Earth in search of men to replace the dying male inhabitants of their planet.

Chani is a traditionally styled robot with a square body and bulky form. In this film, he is mainly used as a tool of intimidation by Nyah. He demonstrates his powers of destruction by blowing up trees and so on with his death ray, but he doesn’t seem to be particularly agile, and his arms remain by his sides for the duration of this movie.

8. The Colossus of New York (1958)

The Colossus of New York

Produced in 1958, the movie’s main character is Jeremy Spensser, a scientist who is killed on the eve of his winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Jeremy’s father, a brain surgeon, is troubled by the death of his son and formulates a plan to give his son’s mind a second chance. He transplants the brain of Jeremy into the body of a giant cyborg, but there are complications in the process resulting in a lack of human decency and understanding in the cyborg. The cyborg goes on a rampage in New York City, and it is only Jeremy’s son who can stop him.

The Cyborg is a large, Frankenstein-like being with a somewhat human appearance. It has the ability to fry people using light beams which come from its eyes, and it can conduct and transform energy. The being also speaks in a monotone voice and wears a sweatshirt.

This recently created horror-comedy film made in 2005 has found popularity with sites such as Rotten Tomatoes.com giving it an approval rating of 60%.

The Gingerdead Man is a serial-killing, biscuit-baked snack who received life when a surge of electricity fired into the oven when he was being cooked.

The evil snack has a distinctive laugh and a foul mouth; he also sports a bow tie.

10. Jack Frost (1996)

Jack Frost Serial Killing Snowman

Set in the fictional town of Snowmonton, the storyline of this film is based around a serial-killing snowman who is created when a truck carrying a convicted killer, Jack Frost, collides with a genetics van. The genetic material in the vehicle causes Jack’s body to fuse with the snow on the ground, and he escapes when he is presumed dead at the scene. Jack then seeks revenge against the sheriff who brought him to justice and purses a vendetta against the whole town.

The evil snowman is very fake looking thanks to the low-budget special effects, and the movie has also become well known for the concept of rape by carrot introduced by the evil Jack Frost.
