Hibiscus refers to a type of bushy annual plant which is used for a variety of purposes. In Egypt, parts of the flowers of hibiscus are used to make a kind of drink called Karkade. Aside from that, different parts of the plant can be made into spices, sauces, jams, and soups. The flowers of hibiscus are also used for medicinal purposes.

Some of the health conditions that this plant can treat include, heart diseases, upper respiratory tract inflammation, colds, nerve diseases, circulation problems, fluid retention, loss of appetite, and stomach irritation. In addition, hibiscus can dissolve phlegm, increase urine output and can be used as a laxative, as well. This plant is added in different kinds of food and beverages for flavor, and is also used for tea mixtures to enhance the taste, appearance, and odor.

Hibiscus can be used as a gentle laxative because of the fruit acids that it contains. According to some researchers, there are other chemicals found in hibiscus which can be used to reduce spasms in the uterus, intestines, and stomach. There are also substances in this plant which might be effective for lowering blood pressure and fighting bacteria and worms.

The possible side effects of using hibiscus for medical purposes are still unknown, but it seems to be safe to use for most people. However, pregnant women are not advised to take this because some evidence shows that this plant can start menstruation and could therefore lead to miscarriage. Although there is no sufficient evidence which suggests that hibiscus is unsafe for women who are breastfeeding, it is better to stay on the safe side and avoid taking it.

The right dosage of hibiscus depends on a number of factors, including the individual’s age and health condition. At present, there is still no sufficient scientific information which may help determine the right dosage, and it is recommended to consult your physician before using it.
