What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free, open source content management system (CMS) which is powered by PHP and MySQL. This is used majorly for blog publication and is the most popular CMS today.

The first version of WordPress was released by its founding developer Matt Mulenweg on May 2003, as a direct successor to b2/cafelog blogging software. Before 2005, WordPress was by invitation only but it was made accessible to all by November of this year (2005).

WordPress is so popular with bloggers because of its user friendly features. Even those without technical knowledge on how to build a website can easily use WordPress, because users do not need to concern themselves with editing PHP or HTML codes in order to put up or edit their sites. Widgets, plugins and themes developed by community members can easily be downloaded free of charge. A report is also generated for the users for easy tracking, containing number of visits on particular pages along with trends. Users can log in through WordPress.com, where they can instantly get their very own blog. In WordPress.org, users can also download a WordPress software script, which can be used to build website even outside of the WordPress.com domain.
