Red Velvet cake has been around since World War two. However, back in those days they did not use food coloring to make the cake red. Instead they used beets. Then in 1972 there was a cookbook around called ‘American Cookery’, it discussed three different ways that the cake could be made. However, what really made this cake popular was the fact that it was in the movie ‘Steel Magnolias’. In the movie the red velvet cake had been made to look like an armadillo.

There are lots of different tails that talk about how red velvet cake originated. However, most of them have proven to be just myths. The most popular one is similar to the myth behind the Neil Marcus cookie. It is said that a restaurant sold the recipe to a customer for one hundred dollars and the customer took the recipe and made the cake into a big success.

Red Velvet cake has withstood many changes over time. However, Americans still love it as they did when it first came out. No one really knows how this cake came about all they know is that they are very glad that it did. The various recipes can be found in many different cookbooks. People especially love to make red velvet cake on holidays such as Christmas. The most recent occurrence of this cake being published was back in 2002 when Jessica Simpson got married to Nick Lachey. The cake at their wedding happened to be red velvet.
