What is Physics?

Physics covers a wide range of scientific study and is a complex subject. However, to define the subject ‘“ Physics is the scientific method of understanding matter and energy and how they interact with each other. Physics can be considered as the most fundamental of natural sciences. Is there really a need to study this complex subject?

Most people would think that ordinary people do not need to study physics. Most of them think that physics is for aspiring scientists only. For those aspiring scientists and to those who are already scientists, it is obvious that the study of physics is necessary. However, for those who have no interests, they would think that it would be a waste of time studying the subject.

In fact, people cannot escape science, especially physics. No matter how people avoid the subject, they cannot deny the fact that physics is part of every science subject. Physics is known as the fundamental science and that means every field of study needs physics to understand each field better.

As fundamental science, physics tries to explain why such phenomenon occurs in nature. It tries to connect things together ‘“ things that human can observe and what causes such things to happen. Other branches of science were discovered out of physics. This is why physics is important and needs to be studied and taught to everyone.

Since the beginning, people tend to be curious on things. Many so-called philosophers started understanding things and phenomena. They tried to explain why such things or phenomena occur thus resulting to several theories. However, many theories have been disproved because most of them were taken purely on philosophical approach.

First people observed celestial bodies and tried to understand behavior of the natural world. Thales, a philosopher is the first one who refused to accept various supernatural explanations for natural phenomena. He explained that everything that happens in nature has natural cause. Since all studies from the early times lack systematic experimental testing, all theories were not really proven correct.

The middle Ages started the experimental physics led by a Muslim physicist Alhazen. Then in the early Modern Europe, Isaac Newton became famous with the introduction of modern physics. However, physics marked a new direction in the 20th Century due to the works of the great Albert Einstein. His works continue to bring direction to physics until present time.

Developments in the study of physics became diverse and helped many field of studies. As of today, the engineering industry heavily relies on physics for its continuous research and development. All industries and aspects of life involve physics. Everything you see around and use daily is contributed by the study of physics.

Studies in physics continue to progress on large numbers of fronts. As mentioned earlier, physics is a broad subject and it is the fundamental science. Research and development will be an unending task for scientists and physicists. New things are being discovered and new applications of physics are being born. Without physics, imagine the way of life we have right now.
