What is OOMF?

OOMF stands for “one of my friends” or “one of my followers”.  It is a type of internet lingo or slang language that is popular among people who frequently visit or join social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook among many others.  As the actual phrase suggests, OOMF is literally an anonymous reference to a friend or follower.  When a person or member or a social media site would like to comment or post about a certain friend for example but he/she does not want to divulge the name, he/she may use OOMF in making such statements.  Instead of typing the whole phrase “one of my friends”, people nowadays simply put acronyms and shortened phrases like OOMF to get their message across or have their thoughts read by other people in social and online platforms.

In the case of Facebook, users and members of this very popular social media site typically “add” friends to their profile in order to communicate and share photos or stories in the platform.  Using the site, one may post shoutouts or status statements along with pictures and videos.  In the case of posts that refer to other people like one’s friends for example, users may choose not to tell the exact name of the subject person.  Instead, Facebook users may use OOMF in many of their comments and remarks.

The same is true for Twitter.  This site is also popular across the globe especially among famous people and celebrities.  The main concept of this site is that users may post whatever they want and other users will simply tag other people to “follow” them.  All posts of people being followed on Twitter will be part of the user’s mainpage during log-on.  Whenever an anonymous post is desired, Twitter users may opt to use acronyms like OOMF when referring to a certain follower.  In this way, the privacy of the subject person or follower is protected.  The mystery or anonymity of the follower also adds fun to the experience in joining or frequenting social media sites.
