What is MWC?
On February 14 through 17, 2011, around 60,000 people flocked to Fira de Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain to celebrate the year’s Mobile World Congress. According to MWC website, this year’s attendance was biggest and best mobile world conference so far. Moreover, the MWC website claimed that it was attended by more outstanding CEOs and more keynote speakers, than ever before. Participants to the conference came from at least 200 countries. It was more than a showcase of the latest trend in modern technology but more importantly, an exposure to a vast opportunity for participatory learning, business and personal interaction, product exhibits and conference updates. There were at least 40 sessions of inspiring and informative speeches from the mobile industry touching on health, advertising, marketing and education.

In 2010 Mobile World Congress, at least, 1,300 companies participated to showcase their products and apps. Highlighting the event was the annual mobile awards give recognition to outstanding contributions in different categories such as innovation, entertainment, advertising, as well as great achievement for economic development. One of the best features of the conference was the chance for attendees to do networking with mobile industry leaders before the exhibition through MY.MWC. A networking lounge was built for everyone who wished to grab this opportunity. The Awards celebration finishes off with a party featuring Duran Duran.

The 2011 Mobile World Congress featured at least 1,400 companies that showcased their products such as latest peeks on latest models of mobile phones, tablets, applications, technologies, accessories, and other products, filling across eight halls at Fira Barcelona. One of the most exciting exhibitions was the App Planet wherein it showcased mainly on different applications; it made available a lounge for networking and App developer conferences hosted by the giants in the mobile industry like:
Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung, Microsoft, HP, IMGA, among others. This year’s conference was highlighted by the 16th Annual Mobile Awards that recognized outstanding contributions to the mobile industry and technology. For Category 1, Global Mobile App Awards ‘“ App of the year on the Apple Platform ‘“ the winner is Rovio / Clickgamer/Chillingo for Angry Birds. The best mobile device award went to Apple for Iphone 4. The Outstanding Achievement Awards went to Dr. Wang Jianzhou, Chairman, China Mobile. The Afghanistan government was awarded Government Leadership Award.

In 2012. The GSMA Mobile World Congress will be held on 27 February 27 through 1 March in Barcelona, Spain. The activities are being prepared for the next year’s conference that is expected to draw a larger number of attendees from all over the world. Participants are given opportunities for product and services exhibition, networking, conferences, media and advertising, event and media sponsorship, and ADC (App Developer Conference) Partnership.

The World Mobile Congress is a gathering of giants from the mobile industry that aims to promote international cooperation for succeeding generation mobile wireless communications.
