Lortab is a brand of prescription drugs that is typically used to treat mild to moderate types of pain.  This drug combines two main ingredients, namely Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen, which both act on the central and peripheral nervous systems.  Hydrocodone is classified as a narcotic analgesic which means that it is highly potent and is able to cause mood swings, possible drowsiness, and even clouding of the mind. Acetaminophen, meanwhile, is also an analgesic and anti-tussive agent.  With both active ingredients combined in Lortab, relief from mild or moderate pain may be expected.

The use of Lortab is strictly by prescription and doctors’ orders only. This is due to the fact that this particular drug can

cause serious medical concerns or even death when consumed in high or improper doses.  Hydrocodone, for example, may cause a depression in the respiratory system if the proper dosage is not administered.  The same fatal concern may also occur for patients who are highly sensitive to the narcotic effects of this particular narcotic agent.  Hydrocodone may also cause an elevation of CSF pressure in the brain or spinal cord which could also be fatal.  Acetaminophen, meanwhile, may cause liver problems if taken in toxic doses. With both Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen active in Lortab, every patient must take caution and seek their doctor’s advice before taking the drug.

With its potent effects, Lortab is taken with extreme caution or even contraindicated in patients with previous problems related to their respiratory system and those with existing liver disease.  People suffering from acute intestinal or abdominal disorders are typically not prescribed Lortab as the drug may make it difficult to diagnose related conditions.  Patients taking other drugs, especially those that act on the central nervous system, are typically not advised to take Lortab in the treatment of mild to moderate pain.
