What is Lexapro used for?
Lexapro is a drug intended for the treatment of adult and adolescent depression and adult anxiety. It is an SSRI type of anti-depressant drug. SSRI stands for “serotonin reuptake inhibitor”. Its generic name is “escitalopram oxalate”.

There are various types of depression and anxiety disorders, but Lexapro is specifically prescribed for adults and teenagers 12-17 years of age who have MDD or major depressive disorder. Lexapro is also prescribed for GAD or generalized anxiety disorder in adults. Usually, the drug is prescribed to be taken in 10 milligram tablets daily.

Lexapro is said to be involved in increasing or maintaining the levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter and is said to affect the moods of a particular person. If there is imbalance of this particular hormone, then mood disorders such as anxiety and depression may result. With the introduction of Lexapro, the brain will be prevented from “reabsorbing” the circulating serotonin, resulting to healthier and increased levels of this hormone. If there is enough of this hormone, then a person is said to have good mood.

Lexapro is a prescription drug so care must be taken when one is taking this drug. Dosage and frequency must always be coordinated with doctors to avoid complications. Some people who take this drug may experience worsening of symptoms and some side effects. Many have reported to have panic attacks, sleeping problems, behavioral changes, restlessness, hyperactivity, further depression and anxiety after taking this drug. Others also have suicidal tendencies. With these serious conditions that may result from taking the drug, doctors usually do regular monitoring of patients especially on the first few months of treatment. It is also important that family members of those affected with depression and anxiety are aware of the possible effects of Lexapro treatment for them to know how to handle difficult situations.
