Juke music refers to the ghetto house music that has originated from Chicago back in the early 90s. Some people also refer to juke music as booty house music or Chicago house music as it originated from the Chicago area.  Juke music is characterized by its drum-machine sound especially those that use the 808 and 909 machine versions.  As Juke music evolved in various clubs and music bars across the Chicago area, some artists added explicit lyrics.  Many songs associated with juke music contain sexually-oriented lyrics and story lines.

Juke music from Chicago is also considered a more upbeat version of the original ghetto house music.  Tracks under this category typically run with 150 beats per minute using kick drums.  There are also characteristic sound patterns for Chicago’s juke music including the unique drum rhythm accompanied by claps and the beating of snares. The sound produced using these characteristic patterns are said to be similar to the sound of older drums.

Many people attribute the more popular genre of international house music to the so-called Chicago juke music.  Not many people may be aware of the actual roots of house music, many musicians in Chicago are proud of the fact that their own style of music has evolved to become juke music and become a popular genre in many parts of the world.  Despite the so-called underground and elitist status of juke music, many people from various parts of the world know about this particular music and sound.  The only thing that kept it from fully exploding into the mainstream is the fact that juke music contains lots of profound and obscene lyrics. Many popular songs that belong to the Chicago Juke music genre are not fully accepted by some groups in the music industry simply because of the obscene lyrics.  Despite this concern though, the popularity of juke music or house music continues to soar and is second only to the Hip-hop/Rap music genre.
