Ixempra is a brand of drug that contains the active ingredient ixabepilone. This particular drug is typically administered intravenously for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment or therapy. The basic action of Ixempra is to cause a slowdown in the cancer cell development in the breast. The ultimate goal of Ixempra-based treatment is to literally stop the breast cancer cells from growing and spreading to other parts of the body including the vital organs.
Administration of Ixempra can only be done after a doctor’s order or prescription. The procedure of administering this drug typically lasts for about three hours. Patients that are undergoing chemotherapy with Ixempra are typically given with anti-allergy drugs prior to the 3-hour intravenous Ixempra session. Anti-histamines are commonly given to breast cancer patients to ward off possible allergic reactions to Ixempra treatment. Dosage of intravenous Ixempra depends on the condition of the patient and the actual stage of the breast cancer. The IVF treatment is commonly repeated every 3 weeks and it may also be done in conjunction with other medications to stop breast cancer.
Typical with most chemotherapy drugs, Ixempra will also cause damage to the body’s good cells and these include white blood cells that fight off infection from various organisms or bacteria. This simply means that people who undergo Ixempra treatment have low immunity from common sicknesses and ailments. With this information, people on Ixempra treatment must be well taken cared of and must not be exposed to people who are sick or infected with other diseases. Ixempra is considered to be a highly potent drug and is contraindicated for patients with other conditions and diseases like those who are pregnant and those who have diseases involving their heart or liver among others. Various side effects may also result from Ixempra treatment and these include nausea, vomiting, headache, appetite loss, and diarrhea.
