What is IVF pregnancy?

IVF pregnancy refers to a type of pregnancy that resulted from IVF or in vitro fertilization. The term “in vitro” literally means outside the body and the technology involves fertilization of the sperm and egg in a laboratory. The fertilized egg will then be inserted to the woman’s uterus after a few days hoping for it to mature and result to actual pregnancy later. IVF technology is typically offered to couples who are having fertility problems and already underwent other basic procedures and treatment cycles. IVF is considered the last option for couples who have unexplained infertility which may be due to severe endometriosis or fallopian tube problems in women, and very low sperm counts in men. Whatever the infertility problem is, IVF is considered the last resort for couples who want to have babies.

IVF pregnancy can only result if the procedure is considered successful and this simply means that if actual pregnancy occurred after the procedure. Initially, women are given fertility drugs at the start of their menstrual cycle. This is to prepare the women’s womb, eggs, and hormones before the actual IVF procedure. The ovaries will also be stimulated to produce more eggs than usual to increase the chances of pregnancy. The eggs will be collected later and will be fertilized in a laboratory using a semen sample from the woman’s partner. The fertilized eggs will then be stored in a test tube for a few days and after which will be implanted to the woman’s uterus after another few days. Bed rest is typically advised for women who just underwent IVF procedure and this may be in effect for one to several days. About two weeks later, the woman will be tested for possible pregnancy.

With evolving technology, IVF pregnancy rates have risen over the years for all age groups. In most studies though, IVF pregnancy rates are much higher when the woman involved is much younger. Women who are in their late 20s to early 30s for example have a much higher chance of becoming pregnant through IVE when compared to those who are already 40 and above.
