Iodized salt is a form of table salt that is fortified with the iodine mineral.  Iodine is considered an essential mineral needed by the body for various processes.  Insufficient amounts of this mineral is considered unhealthy and may lead to various ailments. The basic purpose of fortifying salt with iodine is to make it healthier.  Iodine may be sourced from vegetables and other food items but some people may not be getting enough of this mineral from these sources.  With salt commonly used in preparing various food items, many people felt that fortifying it with minerals like iodine can at least help supply the body with this much-needed mineral.

Inflammation of the thyroid gland known as goiter is said to be preventable if people have enough salt and iodine in their system. When there is not enough iodine, the thyroid gland could be very swollen and some types of this condition will only heal with iodine supplementation.  One great way to do this is through the consumption of iodized salt.

Iodized salt is also said to help boost brain health in terms of overall function. Learning and memorizing for example are said to be easier when there are enough iodine levels in the body.  Iodized salt is also considered to be a purifying agent for the body as it helps stop some intestinal bacteria from multiplying and therefore prevent possible bowel complications and diseases.  Salt fortified with iodine may also help get rid of harmful toxins and free radicals in the body which may later cause some types of cancer.  In terms cardiovascular health, iodine and salt also help neutralize the hormones in the body that are needed for normal heart activity.  With normalized cardiovascular activity, blood pressure problems may also be prevented just by ensuring that one has enough salt and iodine in his/her system.
