iMessage refers to the instant messaging service developed by Apple Inc. Introduced back in 2011, iMessage can be used through Apple devices and computers with iOS version 5 and OSX Lion and newer versions. Standard text messaging is typically done via a network provider’s SMS or short message service. Sending messages through the SMS platform is typically charged as part of the network plan or service. iMessage is providing the same service with more added features via the internet. This simply means that iMessage allows sending of messages over the internet without having to pay for fees that may be charged by telcos and network providers.

The best thing about iMessage is that it combines SMS and MMS technology in the service because it allows sending not only text messages but also pictures and videos across compatible Apple devices. Users of iMessage just need to have an online connection in order to send content to other users that also use this service. The online connection may be via Wi-Fi connection, a 3G service, or an LTE service. With users connected online, exchanging text messages and pictures are made very convenient and easy. Users can also exchange email addresses and contact details from one compatible device to another using Apple’s iMessage app.

Another great feature of the iMessage app or service is that it also resembles that the user interface resembles that of a chat room. Users can basically restrict or choose which people to allow in the conversation or exchange of messages. People can even view if the other person is currently typing a reply message. Conversations can also be started on one Apple device and continued on another device because of the sync feature across compatible devices. Group messages may also be sent using iMessage without the worry of being charged for every message recipient. The messages sent and received through this service are channelled through the special app rather than to the standard messaging feature of the mobile device.
