What is HDR on iPhone?
HDR or High Dynamic Range is a camera feature available on iOS4.1 for the iPhone.  This is a greatly anticipated feature for iPhone’s built-in cameras.  With this HDR option, iPhone cameras can now produce better quality photos with life-like colors.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) involves capturing of images in different exposures to give the best result especially in high-contrast subjects.  A series of pictures will be taken and these will be combined into one image.  The result of which would be pictures that mimic what you see with the naked eye.  Apple’s iPhone HDR feature uses the back camera to combine three images taken in quick succession.  The resulting image will have improved lighting and color when compared with normal photographs.

Using iPhone 4, one will just turn the HDR feature on to use this application.  Once turned on, the camera will save an HDR copy of the image in addition to the original copy.  This way, the user has the choice on which image to retain.  Turning it off simply means only an HDR image will be saved by the camera.

The use of HDR is becoming common with the digital cameras of today.   The HDR feature especially comes in handy when there is too much contrast in the subject, like when both dark tones and bright highlights are in the same scene.  There are also times when the bright rays of the sun causes too much light falling on the subject, eliminating some details.  Shadows can also cause too much dark spots and compromise image clarity.  In these cases HDR will be able to capture a wider spectrum of light and colors, resulting in a more vivid picture.

The HDR feature on iPhone cameras are said to be working great and produces milder results when compared to other cameras.  Others simply enjoy it for ease of use and better looking pictures.
