What is GVWR?

GVWR or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating refers to the maximum amount of weight that a particular vehicle can hold.  Manufactures of vehicles like trucks and trailers use GVWR to inform people of how much weight the actual vehicle can carry at any given time.  The weight measured here includes the actual weight of the vehicle itself plus other items that are loaded onto them.  These items include the passengers, fuel, and all the cargo.

Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings are given and applied to big vehicles like trucks and trailers to adhere to certain safety standards in terms of overloading.  For drivers and motorists, the GVWR provides information on the actual load limit of a particular car.  It is also important to note that knowing the GVWR of a vehicle is one thing but adhering to the load limit imposed is another.  Every person or driver must make sure that the limit indicated is not ignored to keep the vehicle from being damaged and to perhaps prevent untoward incidences while on the road.  Accidents could actually happen because of an overloaded vehicle.  Sometimes the brakes will not be responsive or the suspension system will be damaged if the vehicle is carrying more than the limit indicated as its GVWR.

Drivers and motorists should also not confuse the vehicle’s GVW or gross vehicle weight with the GVWR.  GVW is the actual weight of the vehicle while GVWR includes the entire load from cargo, passengers, and fuel.  So to keep everything safe, the GVW should never be higher than the vehicles GVWR.

Most GVWR limitations are applied to trucks and trailers.  Because of their size and weight, many heavy and big vehicles are restricted to pass certain roads and highways at specific times during the day.  City streets and highly urbanized areas are usually off limits to vehicles that have high GVWR, not only for safety concerns, but also to avoid traffic congestion.
