Gum disease is when a person has infected tissues surrounding their teeth. Gum disease accounts for the tooth loss among adults. It is often painless and as such those suffering from it do not know that they have this illness.
Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease and is often due to the bacteria in a sticky file that forms on the teeth or what is simply referred to as plaque.
Gum disease explained
There are some warning signs that a person is suffering from gum disease. Again, this illness does not cause much pain, but there are symptoms that a person can watch out for when it comes to dealing with gum disease.
Bleeding of gums easily is a symptom of this illness. Individuals who have tender, swollen and red gums should also consult their dentists. Gums that seemed to have been pulled away from a person’s teeth are also signs of gum disease.
A person who has a bad breath or suffers from bad taste, loosening or separating of permanent teeth may also be suffering from this disease. Individuals who notice that their bite have seemed to change or any changes on how dentures fit should also proceed to have a dental exam.
There are different causes of gum disease like oral hygiene that is poor, chewing or smoking tobacco, crooked teeth that are difficult to brush and clean, as well as genetics, can cause gum disease.
Those who are pregnant, suffering from diabetes and are taking certain medicines like cancer therapy drugs, steroids, oral contraceptive and anti-epilepsy drugs are also prone to get the gum disease.
It is best if patients go see their dentist if they notice any of the symptoms as it is best to receive treatment at the onset of the disease. Gingivitis is the early stage of this illness and as such those suffering from it may experience redness, swelling and bleeding of gums easily.
