Fly fishing refers to a type of fishing that uses artificial bait called a “fly”.  Traditional fishing involves using food items like worm as bait to catch fish.  Simple rods or even long tree branches may be used for this activity.  In the case of fly fishing, aside from the artificial bait, the rods are typically made of lightweight steel equipped with a reel to make it easier to catch fish.  The bait used in fly fishing may be sourced from different types of materials.  Some are made with yarn and feathers while others are a combination of foam or fur.  These materials are made to resemble typical food for the fish with some having tails or feathers to make them appear moving through the water.  Some flies are made to look like small fishes and insects with a variety of colors and from a variety of materials that are both natural and synthetic.  As with traditional fishing methods, fly fishing may be done in oceans or lakes.

Many people do fly fishing as a hobby and as a sport.  Most enjoy this activity as it can be done even on shallow waters or lakes.  Salmons, trout, and graylings are among the most common fish species that people can get from fly fishing.  With advancement in terms in technology for the flying rods and related equipment, some people try to catch different species and varieties of fish including tuna and marlins.  These are seemingly big fish varieties but there are already fly fishing rods that are built strong and for these specific purposes.

There are various forms of fly fishing and one popular form is called dry fly fishing.  In this type, the fly or artificial bait is cast to float on water with the hope that fish will come up and get a bite out of it.  There are also techniques wherein the fly is submerged underwater allowing it to seemingly move with the flow.  Another form of fly fishing is called nymph fishing and this involves imitating nymphs after they hatch out from the eggs.
