What is Ephedra?

Ephedra refers to an herb or plant that is native to Asian region. Some people refer to this plant as “ephedrine” or “ma huang” and is widely believed as having medicinal purposes. The term “ephedrine” refers to the chemical component of the ephedra plant and it is believed to be a stimulant to various organs in the body including the heart and the lungs. Because of this effect, many drugs and drug supplements contain ephedra to specifically target certain diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and other problems concerning the lungs. Ephedra has also been used as treatment for colds and hay fever. Many diet supplements also contain ephedra or ephedrine because of its effect in stimulating weight loss.

Aside from being marketed as a weight loss supplement, ephedra-containing drugs are also promoted as energy enhancers and great supplements for active individuals and athletes. But the use of ephedra has increasingly become controversial due to many deaths that are attributed to its stimulant effect. In several studies, ephedra may cause serious side effects if taken in high doses and for an extended period of time. These side effects may include elevation of blood pressure, stroke, seizures, and even death. Other side effects of ephedra include nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, increased irritability, anxiety, and loss of consciousness. It has also been said that the effects of ephedra is increased when combined with caffeine. It is because of these numerous side effects that prompted further studies on the true effects of drugs that contain ephedra.

In recent years, the use of ephedra has been strictly regulated by the US FDA because of reported effects. In 2004, the US FDA recommended the banning of drugs and/or supplements that contain ephedra. The sale and use of ephedra is still illegal in the US and anybody found with drugs containing ephedra is questioned accordingly.
