Edvard Munch is a Norwegian painter who is famous for the painting entitled The Scream (The Cry), which can be considered as one of the most iconic and recognizable artworks in history. This famed painter was born in Löten, Norway in 1863 and was able to establish his own psychological-themed painting style.

Starting from 1889 to 1892, Edvard Munch resided in France and was supported by state scholarships. This period in his life can be considered as the most productive years, but also the most problematic ones. During these years, he was able to complete a series of paintings which is known as Frieze of Life for a Berlin exhibition in 1902. This series of artworks includes 22 paintings, and some of which are entitled Melancholy (1892-1893), Despair (1892), Jealousy (1894-1895), and The Scream (1893).

The mental state of the Norwegian painter is evident and his painting style changed based on the type of emotion that he is currently experiencing. This collection of paintings became successful and Munch became popular in the field of art. However, during this time, he also experienced mental distress, misfortune related to his family, and drinking problem.

In 1908, Munch began to hear voices and suffered from paralysis on one side of his body. When he collapsed, he admitted himself to a private sanitarium. Here, he was able to recover and was able to check out in the spring of 1909.

Edvard Munch painted until he died, and his later works are less intense compared to his earlier paintings. Moreover, the later paintings of Munch manifest his deteriorating condition and different physical problems. The earlier works are darker and these are the ones which became his legacy. His painting known as The Scream was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York on May 2012, and was sold for a record-breaking price of $119 million, making it one of the most valuable artworks ever made.
