What is DHT?

, , Comments Off on What is DHT?

DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone, which is a male sex hormone produced inside the body that causes hair loss. This hormone is a powerful form of testosterone that can cause so much damage to the hair since it is capable of binding faster to specific receptors in the hair follicles.

Testosterone is the male sex hormone, but it is found in both the bodies of men and women, contrary to popular belief. Testosterone is the one that produces the secondary male sex characteristics which include more muscle mass and thicker hair among others.

The body of women only produces around 10 percent of the amount of testosterone of what is produced in a male’s body.

An estimated five percent of the testosterone is converted to DHT.

DHT explained

The production of DHT occurs when the testosterone is combined with 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme. The interaction of the two often takes place in prostate, adrenal glands and testes as well as in the hair follicles which causes the hair loss.

DHT can be blocked by reducing it and through blocking the DHT production inside the hair follicles.

DHT can be blocked by increasing the circulation within the follicles and flushing them out through laser therapy. Laser therapy increases the circulation and takes out the concentrated DHT which blocks in the hair follicle. This can also help in the improvement of both the scalp and the skin.

In addition, there are also some shampoos in the market that can flush out DHT, but are mild enough so as not to harm hair follicles.

The production of the DHT in the hair follicles can be prevented as well. There are two drugs that can do this job– finasteride and dutasteride.

Users however should be careful in using any of these two drugs since they also have side effects which may continue even after the user has stopped using the said drugs.
