The term curry has varied meanings. For some people, the term means a spice or a mixture of spices known as curry powder. In other instances, it refers to a dish prepared by different cultures in different parts of the globe. In other words, curry means any dish that contains heavily spiced sauce made with vegetables or meat. In most cases, curry is served with rice though it may also be served as an accompaniment for flat bread such as naan or roti. These days, curry is prepared in most countries including Thailand, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and England. Originally, the word curry is drawn from a Tamil word kari which is translated sauce. In certain kinds of Indian cuisine, curry refers to dishes that are cooked and served in the form of soup. Such dishes contain clarified butter, yoghurt, chick pea flour and spices.

Curry ingredients in different Cultures

Ingredients used to make curry varies from one culture to another. In Punjab, curry is mage using wheat as opposed to rice. The curry contains more cream and curry. Curry dishes made inn Malayali often contain coconut milk, bay leaves as well as coconut. Curry made in Tamil is what comes to the minds of majority people in the west when the term is mentioned. In some places, when curry is mentioned, people think about curry powder which is a spice used to make dishes. The powder is contains curry leaves gotten from the curry tree whose origin is India. Curry leaves are used in Indian cooking, similar to bay leaves. Curry powder resembles chili powder in the sense that each person who uses it has a recipe of their own and every concoction made is varies from the other. A common ingredient in spiced powder is turmeric that brings in a distinct yellow color. Other ingredients include ginger, coriander, garlic, chili, cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, cumin, cardamom, cloves and tamarind.
