What is Brioche?
Brioche is a highly enriched French bread, having a high content of egg and butter. Its rich, sweet flavor and rich texture gives it a pastry look. Most of the bakery shops in France sell brioche and it can also be cooked at home.
The word brioche is derived from the old Norman French verb ‘brier’, which means ‘to knead dough with a wooden roller’. Similar types of bread are found in Romania and Greece, which makes it difficult to say where it originates from. Brioche is generally considered a Viennese specialty. It is bread that is leavened with yeast and kneaded. It can be made in various shapes and styles. It can also be made like a loaf or it can be molded into a ring.
A sweet brioche can be a good substitute for a cake as it is made from things like fresh or candid fruit and chocolate. Vegetables and meat can be stuffed in a brioche to give a more savory taste.
Brioche dough basically contains flour, eggs, butter, milk, yeast, salt, and some sugar, with 2:1 flour: butter ratio. The usual way is to take the dough, let it rise to room temperature, and then refrigerate it for a long period of time, till the dough develops the flavor. The end product is very stiff dough which slowly rises making it easier to form. Then the dough can be shaped into whatever the user wants. It is then placed in containers for its final rise and the tops are brushed with egg wash to give it a dark, golden and flaky crust.
Brioche can be made sweet and savory as per the cook. It’s easy recipe and delicious taste makes it a very common breakfast item in most French homes.
