Smart TVs are basically modern television sets that have computer-like or computer-based functions.  There is no real definition on what smart TVs should have in terms of features but most TVs today that are marketed as smart television sets have functionalities and features similar to computers.  Standard television sets basically allow the viewing of several channels and playback of movies via a video connection.  In order for a TV to be classified as smart TV, it has to have some computer-like features.  These features also vary depending on the manufacture date and brand of the TV.

Television sets that support the playback of movies and other video via a USB port are commonly referred to as smart TVs.  Having a USB port is considered computer-like and it helps people view their favorite movies without having to rely on a separate DVD player.  The smart TV alone is sufficient to view video and image files.  These same USB ports can also be used to play music files.  Most smart TV brands also feature some kind of Internet connectivity.  The smart TV screen itself can be used as the main computer screen when browsing through some popular sites like Facebook and YouTube for example.  With this feature, smart TVs also have special remote controls that have a complete QWERTY-type keypad. Through the remote, users can browse some webpages on their smart TV screens.

Many smart TVs also allow computer games to be viewed and played on them.  With connectivity to the internet and other mobile devices, people can use their favorite apps or play their favorite games with the large screen of their smart TV.  Some smart TV brands also feature more functionality like touch-screen technology and motion sensor or voice recognition technology. The former technology allows user input on the TV screen itself when browsing through web pages and menus.  The latter meanwhile allows motion control or voice commands on the TV itself.
