CDX is short for credit derivative index and it is part of a group of indices called CDS or credit default swap. Under CDS, the index that covers various emerging markets and existing credit markets in North America is the CDX. Companies that are based in other countries like those in Europe or Asia for example are classified through iTraxx. In the world of financial markets, CDX basically tracks the performance or value of various financial segments in the credit derivatives sector of the financial market. Through the CDX, financial returns may be determined and earmarked against the financial instruments that are invested in the same market.
Credit derivatives are very important in the world of finance and investments since they are used to distinguish between funds that fall under the non-payment or full-payment schemes. Through the CDX, financial investors of certain organizations and entities may also literally transfer the credit risk to other parties besides the actual lender or financial debt-holder. In this way, the overall credit market in the North American region and other so-called emerging markets are assessed more efficiently.
In terms of trading, credit default products and instruments have become very popular in recent times and are the most actively traded between financial entities and organizations. With the increasing popularity of these credit products, getting financial data through CDX or credit derivative index has become very crucial for many investment and financial institutions. The concept of credit default investment products and the creation of various related indices including CDX is said to have started back in 1993 by JPMorgan, a big name in the finance and investment world. Only three years from the introduction of credit derivative-based products, total traded transactions has already reached 40 billion US dollars with half of it involving CDX transactions from emerging and North American markets with the other half involving various debt from other countries around the world.
