The 6 Best Horror Movies of 2014

2014 was not a particularly good year for movies of the horror genre. Most of the year’s releases were utterly disappointing. However, as in all cases, there are some movies that outdo others. Here are the best horror movies of 2014;

1. Deliver Us From Evil
This supernatural horror film is based on a 2001 non-fiction book titled Beware the Night, so this horror film is actually based on true events. The film is about Ralph Sarchie, a New York law enforcement officer who teams up with a priest who has knowledge of evil and mysterious happenings and is familiar with exorcism, in order to deliver the city from the mysterious happenings and possessions that are rocking it. This movie is fresh and interesting. If that is not convincing enough, you will get a chance to see Olivia Munn, who is part of the excellent cast.

2. The Purge: Anarchy
There is no reason for this social science fiction thriller movie to miss from the list of the top horror movies of 2014. It is a follow-up to The Purge, released in 2013. It is a notable improvement over the previous installment and is both dramatic and exciting. A totalitarian government is in charge and reinstates one night a year as The Purge, where all crimes are legal. The people believe that it is an opportunity for them to release their stress when in reality, it is the government’s way of killing the poor since people from the poor regions are in most circumstances, the victims.

3. Jessabelle
Jessabelle loses her husband and unborn child in an accident and decides to move in with her estranged father. She later finds videotapes from her late mother, saying that an evil force is haunting Jessabelle. It turns out to be true as Jessabelle feels spirits are haunting her. There is specifically one spirit that has been waiting for her and is determined not to loosen its grip on her.

4. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
This horror film talks about a young boy called Jesse, who has just graduated from high school. He shares an apartment with his father and grandmother. One of their neighbors, Anna, dies and the prime suspect in her death is Jesse’s classmate, Oscar. Pictures of Jesse and Oscar are found at Anna’s house and it is discovered that evil spirits have marked Jesse for possession and he will soon be under their control unless urgent actions are taken.

5. The Town That Dreaded Sundown
This a sequel to a 1976 horror film of the same title. It is set 65 years after the original movie. The masked serial killer who had residents worried returns 65 years later but it is unclear whether the current killings are by the same killer or a copycat. Jami, a young girl, is the key to catching the killer. The first murder incident occurred after her friend was killed and her life spared. As the movie ends, she goes to college, where it seems the evil shadow of the killer has followed her.

6. Hitchhiker Massacre
This is one horror movie that will make you swear off hitchhiking forever. Set in the 1980s, this horror movie tells the tale of a madman who is also a serial killer murders attractive young women on the desert highway. Sally, a beautiful young woman, is travelling alone when she is unknowingly picked up by a stranger. The story is interesting and captivating as the viewer is made to guess if Sally will survive or be murdered, keeping you on edge .
