How many liters of water should you drink in a day?

In its 2004 Dietary References Intake Report for Water and Electrolytes, the United States Food and Nutrition Board recommends that the daily total consumption of water be at about 2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men. These numbers include water consumed from food, which account for about 20% of total water consumption. Therefore the amount of water (from drinking water and beverages) needed daily are 2.16 liters for women and 2.96 liters for men.
