How many illiterate Americans are there?
11 million.
The 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) reported that there are 11 million nonliterate-in-English adults in the U.S., but the illiteracy issue goes beyond this number. NAAL also reports that 30 million adults have a “Below Basic” level of prose literacy, the lowest level of literacy according to their criteria.
