How many extinct species are there?

At least 891.

There are 891 species listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources or IUCN as extinct. This is according to the 2010 version of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In the extinct list, 805 are animal species, and 392 are in the American continent. These numbers are limited to species reported to be extinct since 1600, and actual numbers for extinct species are estimated to reach thousands if not millions.
