How many people have died in the February 2010 Chile earthquake?
As of March 4, 2010, there are 279 deaths officially tallied from the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that shook Chile in February 27. This is according to official government figures released to the news agency Reuters and published in March 4. This is far lower than the earlier government estimate of 802 deaths, with the latter number reflecting missing persons that have been found since. An unspecified number of bodies, however, still remain to be identified and counted.
