How many covalent bonds are possible for atoms of Silicon?


It is interesting to know that Silicon atoms form covalent bonds and can crystallize into a regular lattice.  An atom of Silicon has 4 single covalent bonds.  The main point here is that a Silicon atom has four electrons which it can obviously share in covalent bonds with its neighbors.  It is important to understand that all the four electrons make bonds with 1 other electron each.  Keep in mind that Silicon atoms have four valence electrons which form crystal lattices in which substituted atoms can dramatically change the electrical properties.
