How many animals are there in shelters?
The precise number of animals in shelters is unknown. Unfortunately, more and more animals enter these shelters. However, according to American Humane Society, 5 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Moreover, the HSUS estimates that animal shelters care for 5-8 million dogs and cats every year, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. 60% of dogs and 70% of cats from animal shelters are euthanized every year because there is no space in these shelters. These days, it is considered that there are approximately 5000 independently animal shelters operating nationwide. Unfortunately, there is no national organization monitoring these shelters.
