They seem to be a fairly common part of celebrity and internet culture ‘ the wardrobe malfunction is one of the most searched for terms on the internet. Most celebrities now have at least one famous picture on the web where an item of clothing has failed in its function. Cynics might say that not all wardrobe malfunctions are accidental and that they have been designed to break at the most convenient moment. Here is a list of the most famous malfunctions.

1. Sofia Vergara

The actress has multiple Google hits of her busting out of various items of clothing but her most famous was at the Emmy Awards in 2012 when the dress ‘ perhaps not wide enough for her hips ‘ ripped at the back, showing her underpants to waiting photographers. Similarly in 2013, Vergara’s Vera Wang gown ripped on the torso, prompting the actress to spend the next few minutes attempting to adjust it. The actress claimed somebody had stepped on the trail, putting pressure on the garment. This was not her first ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

2. Anne Hathaway

The Dark Knight Rises actress has also been responsible for multiple wardrobe malfunctions. Firstly, going braless in a dark dress is normally something that most women can get away with. However, most cameras need artificial lighting when shooting indoors. The woolly top lit up the actress and it immediately became clear that she was not wearing a bra. In an incident in 2012, the actress wore no knickers at the premiere of Les Miserables. The high seating position of her limousine made sure that everybody noticed.

3. Venus Williams

The former World Number One ladies Tennis player you’d think would be overly concerned about her wardrobe choice while on court. Comfort for a Tennis player is important to the style of play, even for those who like to push the boundaries of sexiness on court. Did Venus Williams think about the skin-coloured knickers she wore at the French Open in 2010? The colour of the underwear was a precise match for her skin tone and inevitably, when the skirt flew up during the game, the cameras took the opportunity.

4. Katherine Heigl

Accepting an award in Las Vegas at the ShoWest Awards for her role in the drama, the Grey’s Anatomy star actress suffered a broken strap on her red dress. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. While she was on stage in front of the assembled crowd of photographers and other reporters giving her acceptance speech for ‘Female Star of the Year’, she struggled to hold the strap to prevent it falling down and exposing her braless chest.

5. Judy Finnigan

While the cynics might argue that a lot of wardrobe malfunctions are deliberate attempts to get attention, this one from veteran TV presenter Judy Finnigan clearly was not. Accepting an award with her co-presenter and husband Richard Madeley at the Television Awards in 2001, the strap on her dress broke and the front of the dress fell down, exposing her bra. Crucial seconds passed during their acceptance speech before anybody noticed. An embarrassed Madeley hastily protected his wife’s modesty.

6. Janet Jackson

The original wardrobe malfunction that started a national debate, this event took place at the 2004 Super Bowl. Dancing and singing with Justin Timberlake, at the end of the song Timberlake grabbed Jackson’s dress and pulled at it. For a brief second, her right breast was exposed (though her nipple was covered) before the camera cut away. It was later explained that it was not supposed to have come away in that fashion but the damage was done. The shock on the face of Jackson at the time has also been subject to some debate.

7. Jennifer Lawrence

At the SAG Awards in 2013, the rising star of Hollywood stood to accept her award for Best Female Lead. As she stood, the bottom half of the dress seemed to come away from the top half leading to the actress making a hasty adjustment before she climbed the stage. Lawrence later said that this was not a wardrobe malfunction ‘ that the dress had been designed to open up that way but the fact would not be clear until she stood up. Certainly, it didn’t seem to take much effort to ensure that the dress stayed on.

8. Jennifer Benitez

You would think that wardrobe malfunctions would be more common for sport stars, especially in something physical such as swimming or in this case ‘ diving. It was the 2008 Olympics and the young diver has just completed a dive into the pool. However, the intensity of her dive leaves her swimsuit slightly askew; she adjusts herself ‘ pulling the top forward. Unfortunately, this was in front of an overhead camera that gave a revealing look down the front of her suit.

9. Ricky Berens

Another athlete, this male swimmer was preparing for a race at the 4* 100m relay swimming event in the 2009 World Championships in Rome. His suit was probably was too tight to fit around his waist, something done to maximise speed through the water. When he did his warm-up ahead of his stretch of the race, his suit burst open at the back. The cameras and the assembled audience got a view of his bottom as he stood embarrassed. With no time to change, Berens had to swim fully exposed at the back.

10. Paul Scholes

With the physical act of the game of Football (Soccer), it is perhaps surprising that it doesn’t happen more often. Former Manchester United player Paul Scholes is one of those rare occurrences. Moving in for a sliding tackle during a game ‘ a move he had pulled off many times before ‘ something must have come loose because the photographers’ shots from the game showed a committed Scholes in the middle of the tackle with his ‘tackle’ out.

Conclusion

We live in an immediate world where photos can travel around the globe in a matter of moments. Therefore, celebrities who go to an elaborate expense to look at their best sometimes overlook the functionality of their chosen attire. Certainly this is this case with a lot of the apparel above, where ‘malfunction’ barely begins to cover it ‘ it seems more like a systematic failure in fashion design!
