UFC, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, was founded in November, 1993 by Art Davie along with other founding members including; Rorion Gracie, Campbell, McLaren, and Robert Meyrowitz. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts promotion company. It is a fast-developing sports entertainment business. With an aim to find the most effective martial arts of the contemporary sports including; Boxing, Wrestling, Tae Kwando, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Muay Thai, and other styles, the first UFC event was held in 1993 in Denver, Colorado. Initially, the UFC had almost no rules and was a free-for-all sport wherein the opponents were susceptible to severe injury. After seeing a tape, Senator John McCain abhorred the first UFC events and calling it a ‘human cockfight’ and wrote letters to the governors of 50 states to ban this sport. In response, 36 states, including New York, banned it. The sport became much safer after categorizing the opponents according to their weights. The UFC currently uses 9 weight classes: Flyweight 56.7 kgs, Bantamweight 61.2 kgs, Featherweight 65.8 kgs, Lightweight 70.3 kgs, Welterweight 77.1 kgs, Middleweight 83.9 kgs, Light Heavyweight 93.0 kgs, Heavyweight 120.2 kgs, and Super Heavyweight with no upper limit.

Benson Henderson was born on November 16, 1983 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and was raised in Federal Way, Washington. His mother was a Korean and father was a black American. He attended Decatur High School and Dana College, Blair, Nebraska. He was in the wrestling teams of both academia. Henderson’s mother, Song, wanted him to learn Tae Kwando being a Korean tradition; therefore, he learned it and received his black belt in it. He is an American Mixed Martial Artist, former WEC Lightweight Champion, and current UFC Lightweight Champion. According to Sherdog, an American Website devoted to the Mixed Martial Arts and associated with ESPN.com, Benson Henderson is the #1 Lightweight fighter as of August, 2012.

Nathan Anthony Diaz was born in Stockton, California, U.S. on April 16, 1985. He is an American Mixed Martial Artist and fights in the UFC Welterweight and Lightweight categories. He is the younger brother of former welterweight champion Nick Diaz. He won the UFC 5 and, according to Sherdog, ranks as the #5 Lightweight fighter in the world. He defeated Miller by submission at the UFC on May 5, 2012 in the second round. For this win by submission, Diaz won the night bonus award. He is expected to fight Benson Henderson at the UFC on Fox 5 for the lightweight championship.

Rashad Anton Evans was born in Niagara Falls, New York, U.S. on September 25, 1979. He attended Niagara Wheatfield High School and also participated in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s national championship securing the fourth position. He is 5’10.5’ tall and weighs 102 kgs. He is an American Mixed Martial Artist. He won as a heavyweight fighter in The Ultimate Fighter 2. As of August, 2012, Sherdog has ranked him as the #3 Light Heavyweight in the world. He has appeared quite frequently as a commentator on the ESPN show MMA Live.

Jonathan Dwight Jones, better known as Jon Jones, was born in Rochester, New York, U.S. on July 19, 1987. He attended Iowa Central Community College, Morrisville State College, and Union Endicott High School in New York. As a professional debutant at the MMA, he fought and defeated six opponents over a period of three months attracting the attention of the UFC. He debuted at the UFC 87 on August 9, 2008 and fought against Andre Gusmao and gained a unanimous decision victory. He is the youngest UFC title holder ranking #1 Light Heavyweight fighter while ESPN ranked him the #2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Forrest Griffin was born in Columbus, Ohio, U.S. on July 1, 1979. He graduated from Evans High School, Evans, Georgia and the University of Georgia. He got his training from The Hardcore Gym in Athens for five years. He had been a Georgia Police Officer. He became famous after defeating Stephan Bonnar in the first season of the UFC. After defeating Quinton Jackson, he became the undisputed UFC Light Heavyweight champion. He has also defeated Chael Sonnen, Tito Ortiz, Mauricio Rua, and Rich Franklin.

Jacob Christopher Ortiz, nicknamed Tito, was born to Samuel and Joyce Ortiz in Santa Ana, California, U.S. on January 23, 1975. He attended Huntington Beach High School and Golden West College where he won two Junior College titles of California. He is a former Mexican-American Martial Artist and UFC Light heavyweight champion. He held the title from April 14, 2000 to September 26, 2003. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on July 7, 2012. He has defeated Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei, Silva, Ken Shamrock, Patric Cote, Evan Tanner, and many others.

Vitor Vieira Belfort was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on April 1, 1977. He debuted at MMA Superbrawl, Hawaii and defeated his opponent, Jon Hess, by a knockout in 12 seconds. He is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. He has received a black belt and is ranked as #2 Middleweight in the World by MMA Weekly. Belfort can speak Spanish, Portuguese, and English fluently. He is a devout Christian and believes in destiny. A fight between Belfort and Silva was scheduled on June 23, 2012, but Belfort had to pull out on account of breaking his hand in training.

Wanderlei Cesar da Silva was born in Curitiba, Brazil on July 3, 1976. He is 5′ 11’ tall , weighs 86 kgs, and his reach is 74 inches.. He has fought in the Middleweight, Light Heavyweight, and Heavyweight divisions in different periods. He is a Mixed Martial Artist and has fought in Japan’s Pride Fighting and the American-Based UFC. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest all-time fighters. He is known for his aggressiveness in the ring and excellent spirit of sportsmanship. He is a former Pride Middleweight Champion and Grand Prix Tournament Winner.

Chael Patrick Sonnen was born in Milwaukee, Oregon, U.S. on April 13, 1977. He started his career at MMA in 1997 by defeating Ben Hailey in Vancouver, Washington. He debuted at the UFC by fighting against Renato Sobral at UFC 55. He fought Traver Prangley at the UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night 4 and won buy unanimous decision.  He announced on August 14, 2012 his intentions to fight Forrest Griffin in a Light Heavyweight match scheduled on December 29, 2012, UFC 155.

Ronda Jean Rousey was born in Riverside County, California, U.S. on February 1, 1987. She is 5′ 6’ tall, with a 66-inch reach. In 2011 she was placed in the Featherweight division while in 2012 she has been placed in the Bantamweight division. She is a Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stylist. She is a former American Judoka and present member of the MMA. She is currently a Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion. She qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and was the youngest Judo competitor. Rousey won a gold medal in the 2004 World Junior Judo Championship in Budapest, Hungary. She has won six medals of which three are gold. She is known for her verbal attacks on the opponents.

Conclusion:

To fight or see others fighting is a time-old hobby of human beings.  The world-renowned Colosseum in the center of the city of Rome, Italy was built in 81 AD and speaks about the sport trends of that time when it was used for gladiator contests. According to UFC commentator Joe Rogan, the progress of martial arts in the 10 years after 1993 exceeds the progress made in the martial arts during the last 700 years. The reason probably is that the UFC has utilized the accumulated experience of all the stylists merging them into a new, martial arts cocktail.
