There are a number of learning disorders that prevent children from performing as well as their peers. Such children need special attention in order to cope with studies. Many a times, parents and teachers fail to recognize a learning disability in the child. However, with increased awareness, detecting such problems has become easier.

Dyslexia and Attention Deficiency Disorder are two of the most common problems that children face while learning. Special schools and education centres have come up to aid children suffering from such problems to learn.

The most common features of Attention Deficiency Disorder or ADD include lack of concentration, inability to comprehend what is being taught in class, listening and even reading.

A variation of the ADD is the ADHD or Attention Deficiency Hyperactive Disorder, where children have periods of hyperactivity. Common symptoms include fidgeting and inability to sit straight for too long.

Diagnosing ADD or ADHD can be quite difficult because individuals suffering from it also have other psychological problems such as Tourette’s syndrome, anxiety disorders, mood swings and disruptive behaviour disorders. It is very essential to identify which symptom is an indication of ADD.

The causes of ADD can be attributed to neurobiological causes. Post natal injury, abnormally low birth rates in the family, premature birth and exposure to excessive alcohol and tobacco by the parents before the birth of their child are some of the events that can raise the chance of ADD in a person.

Close to 6.7% school children are affected by ADD or ADHD. It is a genetic disorder, which means it can be passed through generations. The problems that are diagnosed in childhood can continue even into adulthood. Seventy five percent of adults suffering from ADD are likely to get divorced.

ADD should not be interpreted as a mental disability as people suffering from it have average to above average intelligence level.

In cases of ADD, psychiatric treatment is prescribed. Consumption of medicines and stimulants can help in such cases. It has been noted that the condition of 8 patients out of 16 had improved after medication was administered. Some forms of treatment also include the use of anti-depressants.

At the time of treating children with medicines, adults need to be very careful about the instructions they give out for usage. At least one principal of eight schools surveyed that medicines meant for ADD have ended up in the wrong hands. Children show off their medication to peers or are forced to give away their medication. These are instances of which an adult should be careful.

Special aids need to be provided to children for learning. They need to be given extra time for completing assignments and examinations and seated in areas which offer minimal distractions such as windows, doors, air conditioning units etc. Preferably, they should be seated in front benches so that the teacher can monitor them closely.

Because of the number of cases of ADD has being reported increasing, the demand for specialized professionals to handle the disease is also rising. Harvard University, for example, offers special courses to educate people on ADD- its history, symptoms, medications and innovative treatment programs.

With effort and care, ADD can be successfully combated among children. Advancements are being rapidly made to correct the problem.
