Bear Grylls is a survivalist, author, TV Host, Chief Scout, and World Record Holder famous for his death defying stunts, incredible footage and survival tips on his Discovery Channel hit series “Man vs. Wild”. He has authored over 11 books which chronicled his adventures. The show went on to become the number 1 show on America and 200 other countries, having a global audience of 1.2 billion viewers! He has also released a Wii and Xbox game called “Man vs. Wild” alongside Discovery Channel. To learn more about the man of the hour, here are 10 incredible facts about Bear Grylls:

Fact 1: Bear Grylls rose to fame as the youngest person to ever make it to the top of Mount Everest! At 23 years old, he was able to brave the freezing temperature and monster snow in the span of 90 days. He was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. His record has since been broken four times. In preparation for climbing Mount Everest, Grylls trained on Ama Dablam. He became the first ever Briton to ever reach the peak Sir. Edmund Hillary declared unclimable.

Fact 2: Grylls holds the world record for having the highest open-air formal dinner party! Complete with Bear Grylls wearing a coat and tie and seated in front of a table that had a bottle of champagne and a three course meal all inside a hot air balloon 7,600 meters up in the air!

Fact 3: He might be the man with the strongest stomach in the whole world too! From eating tree bark and roots to frozen yak eyeballs, raw fish, a live snake, a live spider, maggots as large as his fist, raw goat testicles, and camel intestine juice! Grylls is no stranger to going to the extremes when out in the wild. His own urine and eating the hearts of dead animals is part of the job. This man knows no bounds!

Fact 4: On the 7th of June, 1974, Edward Michael Grylls was born. His older sister Lara gave him the nickname “Bear” when he was just one week old. The name has stuck ever since.

Fact 5: He has a second Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate! Oh, and he’s also had approximately 4,319 mosquito bites (and counting).

Fact 6: He served the British Special Air Service for three years. His time with 21 SAS taught him all he needed to know about evasive diving, parachuting, demolitions, jungle warfare, unarmed combat, as well as being a trauma medic.

Fact 7: During a skydive back in 1996 suffered a serious injury when his parachute ripped at 16,000 feet. Grylls suffered 3 crushed vertebrae! Other injuries that he’s suffered over the years include crushed and dislocated shoulder bones, a sliced finger, a smashed knee, a broken elbow, a fractured big toe, a chipped shin bone, and a dislocated hip bone!

Fact 8: He proposed to his then girlfriend while they were skinny dipping in the Atlantic Ocean! Keeping the ring between his butt cheeks, he pulled out the ring and was about to propose when a huge tide came and washed them ashore. Covered in seaweed, he asked again. She said yes! Bear and Shara have been happily married for 14 years and have 3 children.

Fact 9: He once made his way along The Thames rowing in a bath tub buck naked! He wanted to raise money for his friend who lost his legs during a dreadful climbing accident. He’s also led a team of adrenaline junkies around the British Isles on jet skis in order to raise money for charity too!
