It is most unlikely that you have not heard about McDonald’s, especially if you live in a metro city anywhere on the planet. McDonald’s is the biggest chain of fast food restaurants in the world. The corporation has businesses in 119 countries, serving 68 million customers daily through more than 34,000 restaurants. It employs more than 1.7 million people. Started in 1940, the company went global during the 1970s and is currently emblematic to the globalization of culture. In 2012, the corporation earned an annual revenue of $27.5 billion! A McDonald’s outlet anywhere around the world is operated either by an affiliate, a franchise or the company itself. The food items primarily served by the restaurants include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and chicken, French fries, soft drinks, milk shakes and desserts.
If you haven’t already noticed, most of the primary items include meat. There are some typical food items which you will find in almost every McDonald’s restaurant around the world. There are some interesting facts about these food items that are lesser known. Some of these are as follows:
In most countries, the primary McDonald’s items have ground beef patties as their main ingredient. All the burgers including the Big Mac and the McDouble use beef.
After grounding, all the beef patties are frozen instantly to ensure that the quality and the flavour of the beef are not compromised.
Usually McDonalds does not use any binding ingredients or fillers with the beef. The meat is claimed to be 100% pure beef.
Apart from beef in burgers, McDonalds has a range of chicken items which includes McChicken, chicken sandwiches, snack wrap, Chicken McNuggets and chicken McBites.
The McNuggets are the most popular of all the chicken items on the menu served by McDonalds. These have ingredients which include white meat. It is coated in tempura batter to make sure that they are crispy on the outside and yet juicy on the inside.
The McNuggets are cooked in a blend of Canola oil which makes them almost fat free.
The only part of the chicken that is used to make McNuggets is the breast meat of the chickens.
Apart from its popular beef and chicken items, McDonald’s has one item on its menu that is made of fish. The is a fish fillet with tartar sauce and half a slice of cheese. The fillets are cut out on the ships immediately after the fishes are caught. They are then frozen and sent to restaurants.
The fish that is used in the process is usually Alaskan Pollock in the USA.
Pork is also presented in the menu of the McDonald’s in the form of the McRib. It is a sandwich that has boneless pork with barbeque sauce, slivered onions and pickles.
Meat used by McDonalds is one of the most hygienic as it is sourced from good suppliers. There has been quite a hullabaloo over the quality of meat being sold by the company. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver had started propaganda against the beef used by McDonalds. However, all has been sorted out now.
