An old English adage is what gave that has given rise to the present day proverb commonly used when one is advised on consuming apples ‘“ ‘œAn apple a day keeps a doctor away’. Apples have a lot of health benefits for our body and are the same fruit that led Isaac Newton to his famous discovery. There also exist many interesting facts lesser known about this fruit consumed worldwide. The apple is typically a fruit belonging to the temperate zones and better still when it is grown in the cooler regions.

Some of the interesting facts about Apple are:

  • There are over 2500 different kinds of Apples that can be found grown in the United States alone and a total of 7500 varieties all over the world. However, it is only the Crab-apple that is the native apple of America.

  • Apples are said to be extremely healthy and beneficial to the body because it contains no fat, sodium or cholesterol. It is also a good source of fibre ‘“ one apple is estimated to have 5gms of fibre.

  • Consumption of a medium sized apple would be approximately worth 80 calories.

  • Apples can be found in all shades of red, green and yellow.

  • The ancient Greeks and Romans are believed to have been very fond of apples.

  • 100 types of apples are grown commercially in USA and in its 36 states. Non-commercially, apples can be found in all 50 states in USA.

  • An apple orchard in USA spans over approximately 50 acres if not more.

  • The origins of an apple tree have been traced back to an area located between the Caspian and the Black Sea.

  • Around 46 pounds of apple are consumed by an average European on a yearly basis.

  • China, USA, Turkey, Poland, Italy are the world’s top producers of Apple.

  • Apple trees can grow as much as up to 40 feet in height and can live for as long as forty years.

  • The apple tree in Sir Isaac Newton’s garden that led him to the discovery of Gravity still lies in his garden at Woolsthorpe Manor. The tree has been cared for by generations of the Woolerton family and is believed to be about 350 years old at present. It still provides a good crop of apples every year.

  • Apple peels are said to be rich in antioxidants and fibre which is why people are advised against peeling their apples before consumption. Antioxidants are extremely beneficial for the body helping heal damaged cells and prevent diseases.
