The world famous, Eiffel tower was originally built with the intention of creating an entrance arch to the World Fair or Universal Exposition in the year 1889. It took 2 years, 2 months and 5 days to build the Eiffel tower, (from 1882-1889).

It is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Here are some amazing as well as lesser known facts about the Eiffel Tower.

  • Gustave Eiffel, a civil engineer of French citizenry is normally credited for the creation of the Eiffel tower. However, there remain two uncredited men, Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin who actually made the actual drawings for the structure. They were also chief engineers in the Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel, whose owner was Gustave Eiffel.

  • The French people call the Eiffel tower, La tour d’Eiffel and sometimes with the nickname of La dame de Fer meaning the Iron lady.

  • Since its creation, the structure has been painted 18 times. Three different shades are used for its painting, the darkest shade being used for the base and lighter ones with ascension.

  • Eiffel tower is 320 metres high and was once known as the tallest man made structure in the world before the record was broken by the Chrysler Building created in New York. Today it holds the 5th place among the high rise buildings in the world.

  • In spite of its height, it is capable of resisting wind sways with displacement as little as a few inches. However, during summers, the tower moves upwards with expansion, almost by 18 cms on the sun facing side.

  • The Eiffel tower ever since it was opened is recorded to have had over 250 million visitors climbing the tower to its top.

  • In 1920, a coat parachute developer with the intention of testing his parachute jumped from the 3rd floor of the Eiffel tower. He was unfortunately killed.

  • Seventy two names of prominent French engineers, scientists and mathematicians of the time have been engraved on the tower by Gustave Eiffel.

  • One of the biggest and famous billboard advertisements was created when Citroen automobile company made use of the four corners of the tower from the year 1925-1934.

  • One can find world famous chef, Alain Ducasse’s gourmet restaurant on the second floor of this world famous monument, a must have experience for all visitors.
