A major shift in the climate of a particular place is known as Climate Change. It does not change on a day to day basis. This alteration in weather is recorded by changes in characteristics related to average weather report of a certain place like wind direction, temperature, rainfall etc.

People are generally not aware of the fact that the alteration in the variability of a climate is also termed as climatic change of a particular place in a particular period of time. A climate may change even when the average weather of the place remains unaltered. Here are some interesting facts to know about climate change.

• Climate change takes place when the climate of a specific region or planet changes in two different time periods. This takes place when the net sun ray absorbed by the atmosphere and surface of earth changes over the course of time.

• There are changes in weather which are caused by natural factors like volcanic eruptions, change in ocean water circulation which occurs over a decade or may take even centuries.

• Human beings have become a major cause for climatic change of this date. This is because of the excessive greenhouse gases and aerosols released into the earth’s atmosphere. These harmful gases have led to the depletion of the ozone layer over time. Therefore, climate change occurs due to both human and natural factors.

• The climate change in different places of the earth’s surface occurs naturally. The cycle of heating and cooling of the earth’s surface has become a normal feature, in the history of the Earth’s climate. There are many factors effecting on it like the solar cycles such as the four-inter-glacial swings in the past 400,000 years.

• Sudden change in ocean currents is also a major factor resulting in climatic change. The plate movements under the ocean bed have resulted in many eruptions of volcanoes and huge wave formation which have changed the climates of the regions surrounding the epicenter.

• In modern days, the climate changes occur frequently because of the increasing greenhouse effect due to burning of fossil fuels, release of harmful gases in the atmosphere like carbon monoxide and methane. The recent warmth on the planet earth was never recorded this high before.

• Due to the increasing heat and rapid climatic change in the earth’s atmosphere, the Alpine glaciers are seen to melt due to which the sea levels are rising day by day. Circa 1980 had been recorded the warmest of the decades in all time.

• In the past fifteen to twenty years, the 10 warmest years have already been experienced by the global meteorological history.  Climate change has never occurred for decrease in temperature; rather it had been on the increase in the past years.

• Climatic change not only records increase in temperature, it has other factors to deal with too. The other important climatic features are amount and type of precipitation, frequent occurrence of severe weather calamities.

• The rise in sea-level can affect the coastal areas through devastating floods and soil erosion. Harsh natural disasters like droughts, famine, heat waves can occur frequently resulting in loss of plants and animals in a large number.

Climate change can cause air borne diseases and many other health related issues in many cities as well as remote corners of this planet. People are suffering from various problems due to adverse and rapid climatic change.
