Miami is one of the coolest places in the world, not to mention its famous white sand beach. Many people go to Miami for fun, vacation, while others settle for residency. However, what people don’t really know about the place is that there more interesting things about it than heat and bikinis. The following are the top 10 facts about Miami that will totally make you say Yes or No to the place.

Fact #1: Miami coined its name from an American tribe known as Mayaimis or “big water.” They used to live in the place from 17th to 18th century.

Fact #2: Miami is located on the Atlantic coast of Florida, stretching from the west to east of Biscayne Beach.  It is known as the cruise capital of the world as it has the widest wharf that serves as the jump off point to many tourist destinations in the world. As you may always see, almost all the places in Miami is warm and sunny but as you may not know, it has the largest snow skiing club.

Fact 3: Miami and Miami Beach are not the same. Although many people would shortcut the Miami Beach as “Miami,” the latter refers to the entire place, which is a cosmopolitan city. Miami Beach is a developed area in the city, which is located on the outer bank. It’s consisting of smaller beaches and bars where tourists go. If you are in Miami and you want to go to the beach, it is best that you say the complete name so you won’t sound misleading.

Fact 4: Miami is the 42nd most populated city in the United States with a current population of approximately 419, 777. If you go to its metro area, don’t be surprised with the bunch of people with different nationality because Miami is not only a tourist destination. The city alone is also considered as the fourth largest city in the United States, with a population of approximately 5.5 million. The prevalent population in the city is mostly composed of Hispanic and Latino population.

Fact 5: Miami used to be a swamp before it was developed in 1944. Today, Miami has turned into a booming urban area with soaring skyscrapers, fancy resorts, and cozy apartments. In fact, it is one of the most favorite movie locations of Hollywood directors. The movies that were filmed in the place are “Something about Mary,” “Goldfinger”, “The Birdcage,” “True Lies,” “2 Fast 2Furious,” and “Bad Boys.” So if you want to see a lot of actors, you know where to go.

Fact #6: The first suntan lotion called “Red Vet Pet” was invented by a Miami Beach pharmacist Benjamin Green in 1944. The lotion was used as sun protection by the soldiers during the World War II to shield their skin from the apparent sun overexposure. The lotion was a little bit weird though with a sticky red color and texture.

Fact #7: Miami was founded by a woman named Julia Tuttle who was later on became known as the “Mother of Miami.” She was a business woman and was the original owner of the place. Believe or not Miami was the only city in United States that was founded by a woman!

Fact #8: Miami is the only city in the United States that is bordered by two wonderful National Parks – the Biscayne National Park on the east and Everglades National Park on the west. So now it has more than 800 parks and 800 buildings. It would not surprise you anymore if it is also hailed as world’s largest collection of Art Deco Architecture.

Fact #9: Despite the booming civilization in the city, Miami hit the number one rank being the Cleanest City in America by Forbes Magazine.

Fact #10: Miami’s south beach was rated as the number one beach in the United States by the travel channel. And if you are looking a naked beach, you also should want to try this place.
